Addressing The Menace of Child Labour
By:Bolu Pelumi Olaosebikan
Child labour takes place when children are forced to work at an age where they are expected to study and enjoy the phase of their innocence, it implies lost or deprived childhood that leads to exploitation and harassment of children in various forms like the Mental, Physical, Social, Sexual and other aspects of Their life. Its more rampant in the Rural than Urban🏙 Area and an evident Fact that not all children in the world, Nigeria as an example are lucky to enjoy their Childhood, a widespread of this keeps occurring in which the children are forced to work under inhuman conditions, where Their miseries knows no end, tough we can say there are laws banning child labour, but it seems ineffective because these children keeps being exploited as a cheap labour, and its because the authorities are unable to implement and enforce laws meant to protect these children.
Causes Of Child Labour
Factors such as Poverty, Lack of Social Security, increasing gap between the rich and the poor(social inequality), lack of education, ignorance, etc. According to a UNICEF report these are factors that launch and propagate this menace.. Kamladeen a boy of 6years old spotted hawking fruits, in a heated sun in Ilorin the Kwara state capital when talked to said "my parents are too poor to feed us talkless of sending me to school ". It is a sad reality that it is becoming so irresistibly evident in our society. For example In India Children makes up an alarming 30% of the labour force cutting across sectors, and also employed in different industries, such as mining, tea stalls, etc Of which they are exploited and misused in various means, with which a minute reward is given to them at the end.
State/Implications of Child Labourers
They are exposed to dangerously polluted environments, weather and starvation. It can be seen in Their physical formation in which they will have sunken chest and thin bone frames which gives them a fragile look. They are at a high risk of contracting various diseases, and extreme exploitation becomes a way of life for them, which becomes very harmful to Their physical, emotional and mental development.. All these are because they have to Toil long hours to eke out a living for themselves and family, they inhabit adultworld and shoulder adult responsibilities at a very tender age.
Conclusions/Solutions
It is well assumed that reading through the feature imbibes a sad and pitiable mood in the mind of readers, because of the negative implications, and causes that comes with it, just like the proverb "it is better late than never ".. The society, individual governments, voluntary Organizations, lawmakers, etc have a huge collective obligation to put a stop to this evil practices, the government can do this through reforms, investment, enlightenment, education, income increase, poverty eradication etc. We as a citizen should have a little more heart by pledging never to employ child labour, but rather discourage others from doing so. Children are heritages from the lord and we must provide them a healthy and happy childhood where they are able to enjoy the best periods of Their lives in anyway we can.. For together we can heal this menace and in turn heal our World 🌏..
